Building Twitter Followers

Written by:

Ok, so you’re a small business and you hear all this buzz about Twitter and social media. So you go to Twitter.com and create an account. Now what? What do you write about and how do you get followers? Well I’ve put together some of the most basic and easiest ways to increase the number of followers you have.

Tips, Tricks, and Strategies to get more Twitter Followers

    The Basics

  1. Participate in Twitter actively.
  2. Re-tweet useful tweets. You will get that person’s attention and they may return the favor and re-tweet one of your tweets. This will expose you to their followers.
  3. Add your Twitter ID to your email signature.
  4. Add you Twitter ID to your business card.
  5. Invite people from your Email Contact list.
  6. Tweet valuable information. Not just about your company. Tweet breaking news, sporting events, social events and personal things too.
  7.

    Upping your Twitter Game

  8. Tweet to certain groups. Do this by using #hashtags.
  9. Start a conversation with someone who has lots of followers. If they engage with you your name will be in front of their followers. To talk with them add the @ symbol before their twitter name (Ex: @Austadpro). This will stand out to people and catch their eye.
  10. Post you Twitter Profile URL on other Social Media sites such as Facebook.
  11. Ask Twitterers to recommend you to their followers, and offer to recommend them to your followers
  12. Ask questions. Simple ones, and be prepared with 1 or 2 follow up questions.
  13. Answer questions. Or comment back. If you reply to someone famous or popular, they may then follow you. And you will then get their followers attention.
  14.

    More Tweeting ideas

  15. Send tweets during the time people are looking. If you’re a business between 9am – 5pm Mon – Fri are usually good times. If your followers are partiers, then maybe 8pm to Midnight on Fri – Sat is the best time. Don’t limit yourself to these times either; it’s just a general rule.
  16. If your followers don’t know what Re-Tweeting is, teach them. This way you get your name out there.
  17. Watch the top twitterers in your industry and see what they talk about and how they act on Twitter.
  18. Tweet just to tweet, not always to get followers.
  19. If you think your tweet will be Re-Tweeted, keep your tweet short. You only have 140 to work with and the person who re-tweets you will lose characters for the @ symbol, RT (re-tweet short hand) and your username. Keep those tweets to 125 – 130 characters if possible.
  20. Tweet links and pictures. This makes it more interactive. People like that.
  21. Check in using FourSquare or Gowalla and have it show up on your twitter, and then on your Facebook.
  22. This method works, but is not recommended. Follow a mass amount of twitterers since they are likely to follow you back. Once you hit the number of followers you want, you can then go through you list and remove twitterers you are no longer interested in following.

  1. Really good tips here but I would add a real simple one (that’s obvious to most people who use Twitter), and that is to use a service like bit.ly to shorten your URLs in your tweets. It’s free to use and it’ll definitely help you keep your tweets under the 140 character limit.

  2. […] and want to make sure enough people sign up, then share the deal with your friends over Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, and other social media websites so your friends can sign up […]
